Hapenxin with the active ingredient Cephalexin - a cephalosporin antibiotic - has a bactericidal property by inhibition of bacterial cell wall synthesis in both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Hapenxin is resistant to the action of penicillinase; therefore, it acts against strains of penicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus and most of ampicillin-resistant E.coli.
Hapenxin is almost completely absorbed, even in the presence of food; it is not affected by gastrointestinal tract diseases e.g. partial gastrectomy, achlorhydria, jaundice or diverticulosis (duodenal or jejunal). Hapenxin is excreted in the urine at high concentration; it is also used for prophylaxis of recurrent urinary tract infections.
Treatment of diseases:
- Respiratory tract infections: bronchitis, surinfectious bronchiectasia.
- ENT infections: sinusitis, mastoiditis, tonsillitis, pharyngitis, particularly rhinopharyngeal infections caused by streptococci, otitis media. Dental infections.
- Skin and skin structure, soft tissue, and bone infections.
- Genitourinary tract infections: acute and chronic pyelonephritis, cystitis, acute prostatitis. Gonorrhoea and syphilis (in cases where penicillin is unsuitable)
- Obstetric and gynaecological infections.
Prophylaxis of recurrent urinary tract infections. For replacement of penicillin prophylaxis in patients with cardiopathy, who are undergoing dental treatment.
Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins and penicillins.
Patients with renal impairment.
Pregnancy: experimental studies and clinical experiences show no evidence of foetus toxicity or monster; however, cephalexin should be only given to pregnant women if really necessary.
Lactation period: cephalexin concentration in breast milk is very low. However, it is advisable to discontinue provisionally breastfeeding during taking cephalexin.
Prolonged use of Hapenxin may cause drug-fast bacterial surinfections.
Concomitant administration of cephalosporin at high doses with aminoglycoside or with diuretics may damage renal function. Probenecid may increase and prolong the plasma cephalosporin concentration and toxicity.
Rarely: nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, anorexia, abdominal pains, rashes, urticaria, dizziness, fatigue, headache.
Inform your physician about any adverse effects occur during the treatment.
