Zinc is an essential mineral that is present in most of cells. A human body contains approximately 2 to 3 g of zinc found in bone, teeth, hair, skin, liver, muscle, white cells, and testicle. Zinc stimulates the activities of enzymes which are catalysts of biological reactions in the body. Zinc is necessary for a healthy immune system with possibility of anti-infections and flu prevention. Zinc helps to heal wounds quickly, stimulate the growth of new cells, and restore cells wounded by free radicals. Zinc is also essential for DNA synthesis, stimulates the metabolism of vitamin A and the activities of vision and central nervous system. In addition, zinc supports the normal growth and development of foetus in womb and children during their childhood and teenager.

Protracted diarrhoea states lose a significant amount of zinc. The reduction of zinc in the body delays the reproduction and restoration processes of structures and functions of intestinal mucosal cells resulting in extending the diarrhoea condition. Therefore, the supplement of zinc is able to reduce diarrhoea in patients with protracted diarrhoea.
